What a journey it’s been!
Over the last few months, we’ve undertaken what’s probably the biggest improvement project in Crondon Park’s history. If you’ve been playing here recently, you’ll have seen our teams hard at work installing new drainage systems and creating an extensive path network across our Championship Golf Course, and we wanted to tell you a little more about just what we’ve been getting up to.
Led by our Managing Director, Marlon Fox, Director of Golf, David Laffar, and Head Greenkeeper Stewart Rogers, this extensive project has transformed our course’s water management capabilities while improving accessibility across all 18 holes. The initiative was born from our commitment to providing the best possible playing conditions throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions.
Our Director of Golf, David Laffar has documented every step of the way in our video diary so take a look for a week by week guide of just what happened during this project.
The Transformation
Let’s talk about what we’ve actually done. First, we’ve completely revolutionised our drainage system. This involved adding an extensive network of drains across the entire course, a total of 30,000 meters. Some holes, like the 18th, now have over 4,000 meters of drainage lines.
We’ve used some pretty impressive technology too, with GPS-mapped trenching that helps us know exactly where every drain is located (trust us, that’ll make maintenance much easier in the years to come).
The Path to Better Access
But we didn’t stop there. We know how hard it could be to get around the course in poor weather conditions. That’s why we’ve invested in a complete overhaul of our path network. Now you’ll find smooth, durable paths connecting all our tees, greens, and fairways. We’ve even given them a special oil treatment to make sure they last for years to come.
Overcoming Challenges
The work hasn’t been without its challenges. Mother Nature hasn’t always been on our side, and we’ve had our share of setbacks. But our incredible team of contractors, alongside Stewart and our greenkeeping staff, have pushed through to deliver something really special. We’ve even had fantastic support from our volunteers who’ve helped keep everything running smoothly and who we are very thankful for.
Early Results
Are we already seeing the benefits? Absolutely! Heavy rain throughout the project and since its completion has really put our new drainage to the test, and we’re delighted with how well the course is handling the wet weather. Areas that used to be problematic are now draining beautifully, and the new paths are making it much easier to get around the course, whatever the weather.
A Thank You to Our Members
To our members who’ve been patient with us during the works – thank you. We know there have been times when you’ve had to play around contractors or take slightly different routes around the course. Your understanding has been amazing, and we truly believe the end result will make it all worthwhile.
The Final Word
Looking ahead, we’re incredibly excited about what these improvements mean for Crondon Park. No more worrying about whether the course will be open after heavy rain. No more avoiding certain areas because they’re too wet. Just great golf, all year round, on a course that’s built to handle whatever the British weather throws at it.
This project has been more than just about fixing drainage issues – it’s about securing the future of our club and ensuring that Crondon Park Golf Club remains one of the finest places to play golf in the region.
